Preliminary & Detailed Design
In the preliminary design phase, the overall configuration of the product is defined. Subsystems are identified functionally along with a preliminary list of parts (bill of materials). These initial design decisions lead to preliminary estimates of component cost and production time and refined estimates of development costs. We then compare these estimates to program objectives outlined in the product specifications and we adjust the designs and/or specifications when appropriate.
acumen moves quickly to develop the preliminary design, providing you and your staff an opportunity to review the design and input to the design process. We use advanced computer aided modeling and rendering techniques to create visual representations. When appropriate, we prepare static or working models of components or the entire system using stereo lithography or conventional model-making techniques. These visual aids provide you with a vision of the product as it takes shape and enable us to evaluate assembly and user-interface issues. At the end of the preliminary design step, the major design decisions are made and the course to the final design is well defined.
During the detailed design step, every component of the finished product is specified. We identify vendors and parts for purchased components and define configuration, materials and finish for manufactured parts. We confer with your staff to evaluate “make/buy” decisions. The final output of this task is a package of engineering drawings that describe the complete manufacture of the product from raw materials to final assembly and finish.
